Saying Goodbye to 2013 and Looking Forward to 2014!

Gens Una Sumus

I am looking forward for a 2014 more like what I have enjoyed in previous years barring a 2013 that instead became one of constant and often unpaid national service.

First up was to develop and conduct a National Arbiter Course at the National Age Group Championships in February, something which I repeated at the Inter State Team Championships in September.

In March/April, against my better judgement I also accepted appointment to Head the MCF Technical Committee and by June/July I was more than happy to give up that position together with that of FIDE Delegate.

Of course one key initiative was the organising, sponsorship and running of a revamped Malaysian Masters, a round robin FIDE rating and title tournament where our women were not forgotten. Then it was hoped that the design of the championship would introduce a new chapter for Malaysian chess - transparency in national team selection, proper training and support for our national players and targets set for and by professional team management for major events.

Along the way I turned down the chance to be at the Asian Indoor Games in Incheon and also the Myanmar SEA Games.

However I did agree to support KPT chess and join the team for the Summer Universaide in Kazan.

Besides the Malaysian Masters, I also served as Chief Arbiter for two MCF national events in two places I never expected to go to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for the above mentioned Inter State Teams and more recently at the start of December in Johor Bahru for the National Junior Championships, both places where the wonderful hospitality often puts city folk to shame.

So for 2014, so far I have agreed to again be at the Bangkok Open in April (no-brainer when held in Bangkok!) and should things work out in Brunei for an international event to be held just before I might have the opportunity to visit one of my favourite places again.

It has been a long time since I have attended an ASEAN+ Age Group Championships and with the next edition in Macau, I will certain try to make the school break work and also make it to Hong Kong and Disneyland!

And of course I hope that Indonesia will have use for my services and continue to invite me to their fantastic Indonesian International Open Championship!

2014 is also an Olympiad year, albeit with a FIDE election, and the timing could not be better for Norway with Magnus Carlsen becoming World Champion. Equally intriguing is finding the time and money to be at the World Youth Championship to be held in South Africa. (And if KPT asks I would not easily decline joining a team at the World University Championships in Poland!).

Malaysians at the World Youth Chess Championships 2013

For me, the results of our representatives at the World Youth Chess Championship that just concluded in Al Ain is confirmation once again that we are a amateur chess nation and that we should be happy with this and perhaps for the Malaysian Chess Federation to accept it as reality and perhaps to start to plan accordingly.

I (and many others) have for several years now provided an analysis which showed how as our kids grow up they become less and less competitive on the world stage and that is fair enough given that all kids are bright with unlimited potential at an early age and over time various environmental factors begin to kick in (especially school demands not to mention growing up distractions such as computer games and social media).

And I am not going to talk about the need for systematic coaching with the right trainer.

U-18

Our current national champion and co-winner of the Malaysian Masters is Aron Teh and if hype would have it, great things would be expected at the World Youth Chess Championships. But luckily sanity prevailed (at least in his family) and this young 15 year old work in progress opted to push up and play in the  U-18 open where IM norm chances would have been greatest. In the end, with 2272 starting ranked 53 and finishing 44th with 6/11 was not bad at all (see http://chess-results.com/tnr119502.aspx?lan=0&art=9&fedb=MAS&fed=MAS&flag=30&wi=821&snr=53).

We had one other representative playing U-18, but in the girls section, and rated 1694 and ranked 72 she finished 73 with 4.5/11 and I congratulate this young lady for keeping up her interest in chess at her age while at the same time also wondering about her level of competitiveness.

U-16

Only one player, rated 1580 and ranked 146 in the U-16 Open, 3.5/11 resulted in 151st place.

U-14 & U-12

At U-14 level, for me always the benchmark if a young player would have matured and show his or her potential, we had one boy and two girls, one of which has in the last year been on the fringes of senior national team selection but always falling short. Nithya's score was 6/11, placing her in 46th place, a big improvement from her initial ranking of 63 based on a 1705 rating (see http://chess-results.com/tnr119453.aspx?lan=0&art=9&fedb=MAS&fed=MAS&flag=30&wi=821&snr=63). The other girl probably had no business being there at 1164 and ranked 109, her final score of 3.5/11 giving her 112th position.

The boy on 1803 was seeded 107 and finished with 5.5/11, enough for 91st place.

Equally one must pay careful attention to our U-12 representatives, usually where the results of our young talents who shown earlier begin to decline (even if the sometimes have their last hurrahs), two well known, almost veteran(!) players from Penang who have had extensive exposure and so always been amongst the top locally in their respective age groups took part and their results showed that both with 6/11 to finish, respectively Yinn Long 67th in open when ranked 77 on 1824 (see http://chess-results.com/tnr119508.aspx?lan=0&art=9&fedb=MAS&fed=MAS&flag=30&wi=821&snr=77) and De Zen 54th in girls section when ranked 60 on 1621 (see http://chess-results.com/tnr119454.aspx?lan=0&art=9&fedb=MAS&fed=MAS&flag=30&wi=821&snr=60).

U-10 & U-8

Now to the U-10s and U-8s where almost all our excitement (and hopes) over the years have come from and we have a mix of very serious young talents and wannabes, many who have been and are extremely well supported in their chess by either well heeled and/or fanatical parents (of course nothing is wrong with that)!

Very young players cannot be criticised - we don't know their ultimate motivations in chess are and all should be encouraged to continue to enjoy the game even if the World Youth Chess Championship is a serious competition.

In U-10 open, our best two young players took part, the older Jun Ying at 1710 ranked 43 with 7/11 finishing 33rd (see http://chess-results.com/tnr119506.aspx?lan=0&art=9&fedb=MAS&fed=MAS&flag=30&wi=821&snr=43) and the younger Lik Zang on 1609 ranked 65 with 5.5/11 finishing 91st (see http://chess-results.com/tnr119506.aspx?lan=0&art=9&fedb=MAS&fed=MAS&flag=30&wi=821&snr=65). One other also played, supported by his father-player-coach and at 1587 ranked 70 ended up 106th.

U-10 girls section also saw the very active Jia-Tien on 1453 ranked 48 score 5.5/11 to finish 64th (see http://chess-results.com/tnr119456.aspx?lan=0&art=9&fedb=MAS&fed=MAS&flag=30&wi=821&snr=48) while the daughter of the same father-player-coach and her friend, with 4.5/11, ended up 107th and 108th.

Finally we had three representatives in U-8 open, all bright sparks and two with 5/11 were 100th and 110th respectively while the youngest at just 6 years of age got 4/11 and placed 147th.

So in conclusion, no one in top 30, most thereabout their ratings and rankings (especially those with lots of exposure), and a few who were perhaps not ready. And a little worryingly, no heros yet in the lower age categories that have in past years provided Malaysian chess with buzz.

FIDE Ratings - MAS - January 2014

$

0

Sensibly deciding to have a quiet evening at home on New Years Eve, I just noticed that FIDE has published the FIDE Rating Lists for January 2014.

Thanks to their participation in Asian Cities, we already know that our current No. 1 Nicholas Chan has now been back as an active player while young No. 3 Yeoh Li Tian took the opportunity to get past 2300!

Sandwiched between them is No 2. Mas Hafizulhelmi who braved India and returned with 10 points less.

Masters champion Lim Yee Weng (No. 4) has no rated events since winning while his fellow national team members Ronnie Lim (No. 5) and Ng Tze Han (No. 7) have played both the Malaysian Open and Penang Open.

After enjoying an almost uninterrupted series of good results and often commendable performances, young National champion Aron Teh had his first (small) ratings set back at the World Youth Championship but remains No. 8 ahead of veteran Jimmy Liew on No. 9.

By virtue of participation, respectively, Jonathan Chuah (No. 6) in the Malaysian Open, and Marcus Chan (No. 10) in the Penang Open, their ratings have also been activated.

I have kept to the top 10 as it is not that our amateurs have such high ratings and also very conveniently it cuts off as 2200+ so my apologies to several of our best young players like Lim Zhouren, Fong Yit San and Wong Jianwen, all who if remember correctly are also part of the current national team.

I have of course no forgotten our women, Tan Li Ting still at No. 1 despite also braving India and with Nur Nabila Azman Hisham a close No. 2.

Fong Mi Yen who plays only occasionally is No. 3. and it the last of our 1900 girls.

Their fellow national team members Nur Najiha Azman Hisham, Puteri Rifqah Fahada Azhar and Masters champion Camilia Johari are Nos. 4, 5 and 6.

No. 7, Lee Yin Lee was our best player at the Summer Universaide while in No. 8 is Renitha Naravanan.

Why top 8 and not top 10? Well, our women's ratings are pretty low and to look lower than 1800 I think would make it an even worst exercise.

For example, a couple of years back our girls were competing (although admittedly a little worst) against their counterparts in the region but the likes of WGM Medina Warda Aulia, WIM Chelsie Monica Shite and WFM Dewi Citra are now 2300+, 2200+ and 2100+ (see http://ratings.fide.com/topfed.phtml?tops=1&ina=1&country=INA) and it is the same if we wish to compare with Vietnam (see http://ratings.fide.com/topfed.phtml?tops=1&ina=1&country=VIE) while the even girls that would represent the Philippines in the same age groups would be 2000+ (see http://ratings.fide.com/topfed.phtml?tops=1&ina=1&country=PHI).

World Amateur Championships 2014 to be held in Singapore

See below together with link to prospectus taken from FIDE website - I believe that many of our players are eligible to participate and given it is just next door in our Singapore it should be very accessible! (I did notice a deadline of 25 February 2014 for entries. and given the coming Chinese New Year long break and numerous public holidays this month, those interested will need to engage MCF right now especially with two free places available).

The Singapore Chess Federation and the World Chess Federation (FIDE), have the honour of inviting all National Chess Federations and eligible players to participate in the FIDE World Amateur Chess Championships 2014 which are to be held in Singapore from 25 April 2014 to 04 May 2014.

There will be a DYTM Raja Dr Nazrin Shah KL International Open in 2014... and entries are coming in already!

KLCA has announced the DYTM Raja Dr Nazrin Shah KL International Open Chess Championship 2014, an even that is now in its seventh year!

(See http://www.klchess.com/2014_01_01_archive.html#6437743226790159300)

This year, the KL Open as it was originally called, is back to being just one large tournament and partnering with the Bangkok Open Chess Championship by being organised back to back! KL will be from 4-11 April and Bangkok from 12-19 April.

Within minutes of announcing this event, I had several old friends of the KL Open, GM Niaz Murshed, GM Nigel Short, and defending champion GM Sergei Tiviakov all confirming their interest and availability!

An old friend from Bangladesh, IM Abu Sufian Shakil is also trying to come and I hope this time he will make it!

L.N. Ram Aravind

Now I have got the entry of an amazing talent - L.N. Ram Aravind who is the current Indian U-11 Champion and who recently enjoyed a shock win over World Champion Magnus Carlsen when he gave a simultaneous exhibition in Chennai shortly before his match with Viswanathan Anand.

(See http://www.deccanchronicle.com/130911/sports-other-sports/article/u-11-champion-ram-aravind-hopes-beat-magnus-carlsen)

Two years ago Aravind played the KL Open and even then he was already so good that some even thought he had to be using a computer!

From the locals, IM Jimmy Liew is already an entry and I hope to have many more!

FIDE Election: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov

One would have to be blind not to see some of the shocking things recently published on the FIDE website, apparently also disseminated by emails to Federations and to the media. Talk about washing dirty linen in public!

Clearly dirty tactics in an re-election campaign but why use the FIDE website and surely not with the tone of dictatorship?

There is always another side to a story (don't we all know that it is always difficult to unseat an incumbent?) so I found the Kasparov campaign website and what he says is not only very different but does explain the things being said (it also makes sense!) and also the flurry of activity in places usually forgotten chess wise that I have noticed had been picked up and reported on Susan Polgar's Daily News Site.

I must say that I have to agree that a draft contract when proven to be different from the final version and which demonstrates governance within a private organisation (see http://kasparov2014.com/2014/01/24/news-release-contracts-and-comments/) is not at all the same as a signed memorandum (see http://www.chess.com/news/deal-between-paulson--ilymzhinov-revealed-in-yet-another-leaked-document-6252).

The world's greatest ever player (Fischer is what might have been and Carlsen is just starting), in contrast to the current FIDE leadership, speaks like a statesman - he compellingly presents his case with facts and is firm and to the point while remaining respectful to his audience.

Statement by Garry Kasparov on Abuses of FIDE Power

SUBJECT: ABUSES OF FIDE POWER AND CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
Dear chess friends, players, organizers, media and public:
In recent days you have all been receiving mails and articles from the current FIDE leadership and administration. The purpose of this sudden activity to attack my candidacy for FIDE president as well as members of my team. To achieve this they even make shameless use of the official FIDE website for election purposes.
Are we at all surprised by these acts of conflict of interest when we see the Memorandum of Understanding whereby FIDE President Ilyumzhinov and Agon put their signatures on a document securing huge financial benefits for themselves and other high-ranking FIDE officers and employees? Those signatures speak more effectively than their thousands of words of denials and attacks.
I am very clear in my criticism to distinguish between the organization and its leaders and between the office and the office-holder. This is a crucial point. Our fight is for FIDE, not against FIDE.Our goal is to reform and improve FIDE for the benefit of the federations and the chess community. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, though he is yet to declare, is my opponent, not FIDE. These actions taken against my campaign using FIDE resources are little more than theft from the organization and the federations it represents. FIDE and the federations are paying to send Ilyumzhinov’s people on campaign trips. FIDE and the federations are paying the salaries of the people writing these attacks on my team and paying for the website they use to publish them. The powers of FIDE and of FIDE office-holders cannot be used in any way for campaign purposes. If Ilyumzhinov or his officials wish to slander us, they must at least set up their own private website and hire a private staff for the purpose instead of further abusing FIDE resources and powers. If they wish to campaign they must raise private funds to do so, as we have.
Such abuse of power is the only way they can hope to compete with our amazing team. With our group, I can confidently meet and work with officials and representatives from all areas, in regional and national governments as well as the private sector. I know this because we are already doing it. Our dozens of campaign visits and the experience of the Kasparov Chess Foundation is proof, not theory. Our opponents have 19 years of stagnation and broken promises.
If you also believe there is a need for real progress after so many wasted years, if you also want new vision and serious chess development all over the world, I ask you to support us. The incumbent President and his team will continue to make promises and spread false accusations, most of which you have heard before since they repeat them during every election. They will continue to abuse FIDE powers and resources in blatant violation of FIDE regulations and the law. It must end and it will end. This time we will all join forces and stay focused and return FIDE to the federations and the chess community.
When FIDE was established in 1924, the goal was to unite the global chess family to better support and promote the game. The federations are all supposed to be equal partners. The Kasparov team seeks to restore that mission of balance, of Gens Una Sumus, and to share our successes and to aid those in need so that everyone may benefit from the great game of chess.

Playing at the National Day Rapid in Brunei

Receiving the first prize at the 30th National Day Chess Festival Rapid... 8/9 with two draws. In second place on 7/9 was their No. 1, FM Yee Soon Wai whom I defeated in a tense round 4 before dropping my first draw.

So while it looks like while I am unlikely to get the opportunity to activate my standard rating, I will probably be getting a FIDE Rapid rating soon!

Of course you need some luck, I benefited from someone's phone going off during the first game on the second day and was completely lost in the very next game after mixing up the moves in an ancient opening that I choose to essay. (My last draw was a formality when my young opponent preferred to offer a draw in the last round when I had already won the event).

As always it was a great break from work and to be in Brunei amongst so many very good friends in the Brunei Chess Federation where their wonderful hospitality cannot be matched is something I always treasure and may I never ever outstay my welcome there!

It's Titled Players Galore at KL Open 2014

$

Even after ignoring the few players who are Candidate Masters (strictly not a title and certainly not of any use for FIDE title norm purposes), the DYTM Raja Dr Nazrin Shah KL International Open 2014 now officially has 42 titled players, currently more than half of the confirmed entries, and assuming no changes then it is over 50 percent based on the targeted 80 entries!

This does not guarantee title norms for those participants seeking them, but together with 14 countries represented here (and we also have untitled players from England, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei and Sri Lanka also playing so that number is really 19 countries), the chances are there if you play well!

Our closing date is 2 March (one moth before official start on 3 April) and unless there is are special cases we will enforce it, of course we already have enough entries but there will almost certainly be some no shows for some reason or another, so with a little more than 80 or a little less, it is no problem at all and I think we are guaranteed another exciting event!

Who is Kirsan Ilyumzhinov?

When you are a famous player, top sports star, world champion, etc., then everyone would know about you, and have an opinion. That's how it works.

In chess there is of course today no one better known and written about that Garry Kasparov.

Early this month, shocked by some of what was published on the FIDE website, I wrote about dirty election campaign tactics http://www.thefidetrainer.com/2014/02/fide-election-kasparov-vs-ilyumzhinov.html and while that has stopped, worst has emerged in poison pen emails to Federations and Delegates referring to completely one sided defamatory stories and opinions posted on an absolutely disgusting Blog without even admission of authorship.

Well, even I was surprised at the depths that Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and his equally desperate cohorts were apparently prepared to descend to until I came across the following http://chessforallages.blogspot.pt/2014/02/secrets-of-kirsan.html.

Then everything became clear!

(In contrast of course, Garry continues to make waves in the international media with his promotional tour in Africa, everything positive, real and beneficial to chess).

Do click on the link to read the whole article and its context but I will anyway extract the translation from the Russian article referred to by Mark Weeks and notwithstanding the limitations of Google to accurately render Russian to English, I think there is enough to surprise even the most jaded amongst us:

Ilyumzhinov, Kirsan

FIDE President
President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) since 1995. Member of the party "United Russia". Created by New Vasiukov - luxury hotel complex on the outskirts of Elista. In 1993-2010, he led the Republic of Kalmykia, during which time repeatedly dismisses his government in 1998 announced its intention to withdraw from the Kalmykia of the Russian Federation, has repeatedly been accused of numerous financial irregularities and violations of federal law, but never prosecuted.
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was born April 5, 1962 in Elista, the capital of the Kalmyk ASSR [62 ], [ 35 ]. Ilyumzhinov father was a party worker, his mother - a veterinary surgeon [63 ].
At age 14, he became the champion Ilyumzhinov of Kalmykia Chess [ 63 ]. In 1979 he graduated with honors from high school [ 62 ]. In 1979-1980 he worked as a fitter at the "Star" ("DIR") [ 35 ], [ 63 ]. In 1980-1982 years serving in the Soviet Army, in parts of the North Caucasus Military District [ 62 ], [ 35 ].

Let's Not Kid Ourselves - We Know What The Real Issues Are!

Following what I have learnt about Kirsan (previous post), I have spent a lot of time checking out the campaigns of both parties and now, against the background is what is happening to Ukraine in Crimea, the letter below has been published.

Together with the "right" moves by decent people in chess I am now seeing everywhere, in particular Asia and Africa (where the future of chess must reside in a post Russia (Putin) chess world), change is certainly coming.

Appeal Letter from Government Officials to Baltic Chess Federations

Elections for the next president of FIDE, the International Chess Federation, will take place in August 2014 in Tromsø, Norway. The elections for president of any major sports federation are always extremely important and have a certain political significance, but in the case of the upcoming FIDE elections the political factor is especially salient. In large part, this has been determined by the two contenders for the post: the 13th world chess champion, Garry Kasparov, and the current head of FIDE, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
Garry Kasparov is not only a legendary chess player who has made a tremendous contribution to the sport’s development, but he is also an individual who has devoted himself to the spread of democracy and freedom around the world. At the end of the Soviet era, he consistently supported the Baltic countries in their fight for independence. Today, Kasparov is one of the leaders of the Russian opposition and a harsh critic of Putin’s authoritarian regime, a regime that has destroyed democratic institutions and human rights in Russia, as well as threatening the territorial integrity and sovereignty of neighboring states.
His challenger, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, has been the president of FIDE for nineteen years. The former president of one of the republics of the Russian Federation, Ilyumzhinov is an active supporter of Putin’s regime and takes advantage of its support.
In these circumstances, the choice the Baltic countries’ chess federations face in the upcoming elections is not a matter confined to sports, but a political, even civilizational, question. The people of the Baltics long ago made the choice to build their states on the principles of democracy and freedom. Supporting a candidate who relies on the administrative and financial resources of the Kremlin is entirely unacceptable and counter to their national interests. Consequently, we appeal to the heads of the chess federations of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to act swiftly to announce their support for Garry Kasparov’s candidacy for the FIDE presidency.

Yeoh Li Tian at HD Bank

Yeoh Li Tian is arguably our brightest young prospect, now nationally ranked No. 3 after breaking the 2300 barrier last year, and his participation in the HB Bank Cup International Open held in Ho Chi Minh City from 10-15 March 2014 was in my mind going to be a barometer of his progress.

Unfortunately his (and his father's) desire to play the strongest possible events this year to confirm his level and to be able to move to a higher level meant he was going to choose between this tournament and the National Closed Championships.

Going to Vietnam meant that if MCF sticks to the rules they have already announced as to national team selection, Li Tian would miss out on qualifying to the Malaysian Masters and so will unfortunately not be part of the Malaysian team at the coming Tromso Olympiad in August.

HB Bank is now in its fourth year and it has never been a very large tournament, usually having less than 40 players participating of which the majority are Vietnamese (but with a couple of strong Chinese players invited), and once again this proved to be the norm.

In the end, Vietnamese superstar (and defending champion) Le Quang Liem's making the trip back from the USA, where he is part of the SPICE program at Webster University, did not end as hoped for by the organisers as their other big talent Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son defeated him and emerged the winner in a trhee way tie-break.

Going back to young Li Tian, besides his actual performance, I was very curious how he would do compared with Singapore's Tin Jinyao and the Philiipine's Paulo Bersamina, both players who have received a lot of hype over the last few years.

Looking at Li Tian's games and the "black and white facts" as shown by the his results against his individual opponents, I have the impression of a player really not very much different than say a year or two ago and I would even argue he has played better.

It seems like Li Tian is still not able to compete with the really strong players (and also the professionals able to wait their chance to exploit his limitations) but can easily hold and can even on occasion be able to beat veteran titled players.

But on the plus side, Li Tian is picking up valuable experience and I do hope he is able to review his post tournament games not just with his father and a computer but with also other strong players so that he gets all the right lessons and then knows what he needs to do (and better) to be able to continue to improve. And it is of course nice that he picked up a few more rating points!

R. I. P. Laurence How - Malaysian Chess Owes You A Lot!

The older chess community will remember Laurence How, founder of the Chess Association of Selangor and former Malaysian Chess Federation Hon. Secretary in the 70's and 80's. He was a prime driver of Malaysian chess in arguably its most successful period.

Sadly in the last month he was battling with cancer and in the last week picked up an ultimately fatal infection with his immune system down after undergoing chemotherapy.

At the moment his family requests for privacy and a quiet funeral in this difficult time for them.

Countdown to KL Open

We are practically ready to go now, various organising details are now bringing firmed up and the technical team has also now been confirmed and since there is a very limited budget I will have to be the Chief Arbiter, and in return for IO and FA title norms respectively, but also without pay and are Amiriul Mohamad as the Tournament Director and Cheong Kok Love serving as a self sponsored Deputy Chief Arbiter!

In what is likely to be the last KL Open (at least not on this scale in the foreseeable future), even without any serious effort to promote the event internationally and with minimal local publicity, the breakdown of participation is as follows:

18 GMs and 18 IMs, 44 titled players, 81 from 86 rated, 20 countries.

The Malaysians include our new National champion and current National Junior champion Fong Yit San, also our first IM Jimmy Liew, nationally third ranked Yeoh Li Tian and National Junior Girls Champion Tan Li Ting.

It's Happening with Kasparov Chess Foundation Asia-Pacific!

The Kasparov Chess Foundation Asia-Pacific (KCFAP) was launched by Garry Kasparov in Singapore on 16 November 2013 and as can be seen on its website, KCFAP has been busy, and can be seen from the article above, has already provided technical assistance to the organisers of the 27th SEA Games that was held less than a month later!

During the launch on the occasion of the Singapore Chess Federation (SCF) Awards Dinner, the SCF had received SGD 30,000 (see: http://en.chessbase.com/post/kasparov-visits-singapore-and-thailand), a sum that was apparently given to start a Talent Development program.

Kasparov is going to be making another sweep through the region soon and from what I have heard from my friends in several of the countries he visited earlier, in a very short time he has made major contributions of time, energy (and even provided seed money) to actualise ideas at that are doable, make sense and clear addresses specific local needs, and so big things are happening, beginning with USD 400,000 given by the Macau government for chess in schools!

A Very Busy Month

April 2014 is going to be a very busy month indeed!

First up of course is the KL Open from 4-11 April and that is followed by both the National Age Groups Championships from 12-16 April and the Bangkok Open from 12-19 April.

Unfortunately and despite the Bangkok Open being a long standing and well respected event now for fourteen years and organised at the same time every year, the powers that be in Asian chess sitting in Al Ain (including its Deputy President Toti Abundo who hails from the Philippines), have with hardly any notice and quite suddenly, decided to hold the Asian Continental in Sharjah from 16-26 April and so ensured that several top players had to withdraw.

Sometimes one would imagine that in chess that there are two completely difference places called Asia.

In contrast, another long standing event, JAPFA Chess Festival in Jakarta from 20-25 April, is clearly a case where federations and organisers talk to each other (and work together) to ensure everyone is equally successful, and so all chessplayers benefit.

There is also the World Amateur in Singapore from 25 April-4 May, again cooperation, even if not strictly speaking the same audience, but still no clash given it is around an hour and a half flight from Jakarta.

Unfortunately top Malaysian players are missing out almost all these, the Malaysian Masters being held from 22-27 April, but there is the consolation of the Selangor Open 30 April to 4 May should a players rating be too high for Singapore and we do today have a at least two young players who have for some time now are professional chessplayers.

For Malaysia it is particularly busy, maybe even too much, coming off first the National Closed 12-16 March followed by MSSM Finals 24-28 March and then this very busy April, and yes, there is no April's Fool joke with the tournaments and dates given!
